Evangel University to present spring drama production: “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”

Home  >  Featured News  >  Article: Evangel University to present spring drama production: “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”

Charlie Brown Spring Production 2013 200dpi

Evangel University students will present the Broadway musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown this month in the Barnett Fine Arts Theatre.

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. April 4-6 and April 11-13. There will also be matinee performances at 2 p.m. on April 6 and April 13.

“EU Night” is scheduled for opening night, April 4. Tickets are $5 for everyone with an Evangel ID in attendance that evening.

For all other shows, tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for group tickets (10 people or more), and $6 for students.

The production will be directed by David Smith, director of Evangel’s theatre program, and Lori Lawley, 1985 Evangel graduate.

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is adapted from the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schultz, with book, music and lyrics by Clark Gesner.

In this musical Charlie Brown, as portrayed by Evangel senior Jordan Walker, searches for approval from friends Lucy, Patti, Schroeder, Linus and Snoopy.

“It excites me to have the opportunity to portray an American icon. The musical is full of humor, upset and trivial things, but in the end, it’s about finding out who you are,” says Walker. “This is what I like most about the musical — its relevancy to life today. It’s a look into how we grow through our triumphs and disappointments.”

Walker is playing the lead role after completing his senior voice recital earlier this spring as part of the certification requirements for performance majors. He plans to pursue a master’s degree in music education at Evangel after graduation.

“This is a show for the entire family. You won’t want to miss this delightful spin on the famous Peanuts comic strip,” Smith says. “Expect a lively play with wonderful music and staging.”

Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling Lisa Kraus at (417) 865-2815, ext. 8640.

Fielding doctoral student Carol A. Preston-Brown selected to present at 14th Annual Narrowing the Gulf Conference

Posted by Hilary Edwards on Thu, Mar 14, 2013

Identified as an emerging scholar, Preston-Brown will present a workshop based on her dissertation research titled “Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water: An Intervention for Youth Aging Out of the Foster Care System," in which she states:

Education outcomes for former foster youth are dismal. Although 70% of youth in foster care want to go to college (Rassen, Cooper, & Mery, 2010), the resources available for their success in California Community colleges are clearly insufficient.  My dissertation research begins with the mandate of the Chancellor of California Community Colleges to create systems of support for former foster youth who transition to community colleges.  My work also addresses the significance of academic K-12 preparation, which should lay the foundation to support quality-of-life-goals, so former foster youth can become contributing members of society.

The annual Narrowing the Gulf Conference focuses on improving classroom instruction and supporting services for underrepresented students in postsecondary education. Preston-Brown’s research dovetails well with the theme of the conference given that she discusses former foster youth on the community college campus. Her research follows the theories of Maslow, Friere, Chickering, and Erickson as she explores the lack of positive outcomes and support for these students.

Fielding alumni Noah Harris and Steven Wallis selected to present at USASBE in San Francisco January 2013

Posted by Hilary Edwards on Wed, Nov 28, 2012

USASBE is the largest independent, professional, academic organization in the world dedicated to advancing the discipline of entrepreneurship. With over 1000 members from universities and colleges, for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations, and the public sector, USASBE is a diverse mix of professionals that share a common commitment to fostering entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviors.

Entrepreneurs want to be more effective. So do scholars, researchers, and the community supporting entrepreneurship. While there are significant opportunities for increased collaboration between business practitioners and academia there are also noteworthy challenges. Despite a plethora of theories, we have little certainty about which ones are unarguably effective. In the present workshop, we suggest combining Consortial Benchmarking (CB) and Propositional Analysis (PA) to move toward a unified theoretical-practical perspective. CB and PA support achieving maximal entrepreneurship though optimizing entrepreneurship theories and practices. This workshop presents an innovative approach to theoretical-practical integration by structured sharing of practice, limitations, and insights.

Noah HarrisHarris is a multi-lingual (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian) business advisor with the Northern California Small Business Development Center Network. Harris’ career reflects over 18 years of operations, training, management, leadership, and consulting experience in a range of industries including: U.S. Department of Defense, business development, risk management/loss prevention, logistics, education and non-profit. He also serves as business services coordinator at Canal Alliance, and Consulting Partner with Shamana, Inc. Noah holds a BS in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and a MA in Organization Management & Development from Fielding Graduate University where he is currently completing a graduate sustainability leadership program and was appointed to the Fielding Alumni Council.

large steve.wallis phd fellow Wallis received his PhD in 2006 from Fielding Graduate University. He has more than a decade of experience as an organizational development consultant in Northern California and a broad range of interdisciplinary interests. Wallis also serves as Adjunct Faculty at Capella University and as Director for the Foundation for the Advancement of Social Theory (FAST). At FAST he supports emerging scholars who are working to identify rigorous paths for the validation of theory through a deeper knowledge of critical metatheory and metapolicy analysis. His academic publications cover a range of fields including ethics, management, organizational change, social entrepreneurship, and policy.
