Crusaders eliminated in bout with LSU-Shreveport

3/15/2013 UPDATE: 

The Evangel men’s basketball team ended a historic season by dropping their NAIA National Championship Tournament second round game to LSU-Shreveport 77-70.

The No. 9 Crusaders finish the season 26-7 and captured both the regular season and postseason tournament titles in the Heart of America Conference.

Stephen Cotten paced Evangel with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Victor Agbasi and Korry Tillery contributed to the attack with 13 and 12 points respectively. 

Evangel outscored LSU-Shreveport 39-36 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a ten point halftime deficit.

3/14/2013 UPDATE: 

Evangel advanced to the second round of the NAIA-I National Championship Tournament after claiming a 64-54 win over Montana State-Northern March 13. The No. 9 Crusaders will advance to the second round and play LSU-Shreveport March 15 at 4:30 p.m.

Against Montana State-Northern, Zack Kleine poured in 18 points, while Victor Agbasi chipped in 16 points and J.J. Williams finished with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Evangel won its opening round game for the third-straight season, but will look to win a second round contest for the first time in their Division-I history. 

LSU-Shreveport pulled an upset over No. 8 seed Pikeville in the first round of the tournament. They were runner-up in the Red River Conference this season and carry an overall record of 26-6 into the the game.

3/7/2013 UPDATE:

After winning both the regular season and postseason tournament in the Heart of America Conference, the Evangel men’s basketball team has been seeded ninth for the NAIA-I National Championship Tournament. 

They will meet Montana State-Northern March 13 at 10:30 p.m. in Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium. The contest will be the first ever meeting of the schools. 

The field of 32 teams also includes Culver-Stocketon and MidAmerica Nazarene from the HAAC.

All games in the tournament will be broadcast live locally on ESPN 1400 AM and online for those outside the Springfield area.

3/6/2013 UPDATE:

Evangel finished a dominant conference season March 5 by winning the Heart of America Conference tournament championship 88-81 over MidAmerica Nazarene. By avenging two earlier losses to the Pioneers, Evangel captured both the regular season and tournament crowns. 

Stephen Cotten turned in one of his finest performances of the season, with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Victor Agbasi added 19 points including 3 of 4 from behind the arc, while Brodie Wingert contributed 15.

MNU’s Rustin Dowd led all scorers with 24 points.

Evangel’s tournament title is their second in three years and their fifth since 2002.

The Crusaders will travel to Kansas City for the NAIA-I National Tournament March 13 or March 14, depending on seeding. The national tournament bracket will be announced March 6 at 7:15 p.m. on www.naia.org and the NAIA’s Facebook page.

3/3/2013 UPDATE:

Evangel advanced to the Heart of America Conference men’s basketball championship game with a 77-55 win over Central Methodist at the Ashcroft Center March 2.

Stephen Cotten,  Zack Kleine, Victor Agbasi and Korry Tillery each contributed double-digit scoring lines as the Crusaders rolled to their 10th HAAC tournament championship game in history.

No. 3 seed MidAmerica Nazarene awaits Evangel after defeating Culver-Stockton 86-74 in the other semifinal game.

The championship game will take place March 5 at 7 p.m at the Ashcroft Center.

3/1/2013 UPDATE:

Evangel’s men advanced in the Heart of America Athletic Conference basketball tournament with a 73-68 victory over Peru State February 28 at the Ashcroft Center.

Zack Kleine led four double -digit scorers with 17 points, and Victor Agbasi added 15.

They move on to host Central Methodist March 2 at 7 p.m. in semifinal action. The other side of the bracket features MidAmerica Nazarene versus Culver-Stockton.

The Lady Crusaders dropped their first-round tournament game at Benedictine which means the end of their season. Emily Akins led all scorers with 21 points.

Prior to the games, the HAAC released its’ all-conference lists. On the men’s side five players were honored:

On the women’s side, two were recognized for their achievements:

Brackets have been set for the 2013 Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments.

The Evangel men earned the No. 1 seed and host No. 8 Peru State at 7 p.m. February 28 in the Ashcroft Center. The Crusaders earned home court advantage throughout the tournament by winning the regular season title.

Other first round pairings include No. 4 Central Methodist hosting No. 5 Benedictine, No. 3 MidAmerica Nazarene hosting No. 6 Baker, and No. 2 Culver-Stockton hosting No. 7 Avila.

Evangel has won the postseason tournament five times, and has an overall record of 28-14 in the HAAC Tournament.

Following the conclusion of the postseason tournament March 5, Evangel will await selections and seeding for the 2013 NAIA Division I National Tournament. The selection show is set for March 6 at 7:15 p.m. and will be unveiled on the NAIA’s Facebook page.

The No. 7 seed Lady Crusaders begin their postseason on the road with a visit to No. 2 Benedictine February 28 at 7 p.m. This will be the third meeting between the schools this season.
