Elon's undergrad business program retains top national ranking

Bloomberg Businessweek gives the Martha & Spencer Love School of Business a #42 ranking among the nation's top undergraduate programs.

Michael Rodriguez, assistant professor of marketing, works in The Chandler Family Professional Sales Center with students involved in the competitive sales team.

This year's ranking is up one spot from the 2012 rankings. Elon debuted in the Bloomberg Businessweek survey in 2011 at #60. Bloomberg Businessweek identifies the nation's top undergraduate business programs based on nine measures of student satisfaction, a survey of employers and academic quality.

“This ranking is wonderful news to share with our students, parents and alumni for it shows that the Love School of Business competes on a national level with the best universities – and holds its own. In North Carolina only two universities are ahead of us – UNC Chapel Hill and Wake Forest. On a national basis when one looks at private universities we are ranked in the top 25. This is wonderful company to be in," says Raghu Tadepalli, dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business.

"Credit for this ranking goes to our faculty and staff who provide our students with a wonderful education both inside and outside the classroom. Our graduating students helped us by completing the survey in large numbers and they too deserve thanks for doing so," he said.

The only other North Carolina undergraduate business schools ranked in the top 50 were the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (#10) and Wake Forest University (#18).

Elon's #42 undergraduate ranking follows a #1 national ranking by Bloomberg Businessweek of Elon's part-time MBA program.

In developing the Best Undergraduate Business Schools ranking, Bloomberg Businessweek used surveys of both senior business majors and employers, median starting salaries for graduates, and the number of alumni each program sends to top MBA programs. A calculation of academic quality is also included in the methodology, combining average SAT scores, student-faculty ratios, class size in core business courses, the percentage of students with internships, and the number of hours devoted to class work. This year, 145 undergraduate business programs participated in the ranking.

The student survey score counts for 30 percent of the final ranking and Elon students praised the school for innovative academic programs, internship support, dedicated faculty and state-of-the-art facilities.

“We have unusually small class sizes so you get plenty of opportunities to engage with professors personally and with other classmates. The administration makes a strong effort to help you secure internship opportunities and jobs after college,” wrote one student.

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business is accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, an honor achieved by less than five percent of business schools in the world.

The Love School includes 1,347 students who study in the departments of accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing and entrepreneurship. The Love School includes a prestigious Business Fellows program, the Chandler Family Professional Sales Center, the Doherty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, the William Garrard Reed Finance Center, and an Executive Education program.

Professor Donald E. Gibson, Ph.D., named dean of Fairfield University's Charles F. Dolan School of Business

Image: Don GibsonDonald E. Gibson, Ph.D., interim dean of Fairfield University's Charles F. Dolan School of Business for nearly two years and a respected and popular faculty member for the past 12 years, has been named the new dean of the business school. His appointment follows an extensive national search.

"I look forward to leading the Dolan School of Business toward our goal of educating students to be ethical business leaders for a global future," said Dr. Gibson, professor of management and a leader in his field of organizational behavior research. "We have a strong faculty and engaged students, creating a learning community infused by Jesuit values. Working with this community, along with our staff, alumni, and business community, I seek to raise the profile of the Dolan School of Business to be recognized among the ranks of the best business schools."

A Trumbull, Conn., resident, Dr. Gibson, a leading expert in the study of anger in the workplace, will lead a school that continues to experience impressive growth. The Dolan School of Business features a world-class faculty engaging in intriguing scholarship with experience from a wide array of industries, and counts among its alumni prominent business leaders at top financial institutions and Fortune 500 companies. The School is listed by Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report among the best business programs in the U.S.

In making the announcement, Fairfield University President Rev. Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J., noted that Dr. Gibson is not only an accomplished scholar, but also a talented and skillful administrator, as demonstrated by his accomplishments while serving as interim dean. "Don led the School during the rigorous and critical re-accreditation process, guiding the development of strategic themes and initiatives to move the School forward," Fr. von Arx said. "Don understands the unique needs of a cutting-edge, competitive business school infused with Jesuit values, while fully recognizing the advantages of collaboration across the institution."

Dr. Gibson came to Fairfield in 2001 as an associate professor of management. In 2008, he was promoted to professor and named chair of the management department, and was appointed interim dean of the Dolan School in 2011.

Before joining Fairfield, he was an assistant professor of organizational behavior at the Yale School of Management from 1995 to 2001. He received an MBA and Ph.D. from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has a master's in radio and television from San Francisco State University, and a bachelor's in administrative studies from the University of California, Riverside.

He has taught in the areas of organizational behavior, leadership, and human resource management. His research interests include the attributes and impact of organizational role models, anger and aggression in workplace conflict, and the management of individual emotional experience in organizations. In 2011, he won the prestigious Robert E. Wall Faculty Award to advance his research, a project entitled, "The Sound and the Fury: Understanding Anger in the Workplace."

Dr. Gibson has served in various leadership positions on professional boards and is currently on the executive committee of the International Association for Conflict Management. He is also a board and executive committee member of the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport. Prior to his academic career, he worked in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, managing a post-production team for Lorimar Productions, producers of Dallas, Falcon Crest and Knots Landing. Gibson has appeared on stage at Fairfield University's Quick Center for the Arts in recent productions of Juan Mayorga's Perpetual Peace and Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet. It was partly Dr. Gibson's idea that the latter play be staged in an effort to use live theater on campus as a dynamic classroom where students can learn life lessons. It helped business students study ethics in the workplace, among many other lessons.

Flagler College and SCORE to host business planning workshop

Email to a Friend

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (08/15/2011)(readMedia)-- Flagler College is again partnering with SCORE - Counselors to America's Small Business - to host a four-part planning workshop for small businesses. This will be the fourth time that SCORE has presented this highly successful workshop series.

All sessions will be held at Flagler College on Wednesday evenings Sept. 14, Sept. 21, Oct. 5 and Oct. 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost to participate in all four sessions is $99. Attendance at individual sessions is possible for $30 per session.

The workshop is designed both for those with an existing business who wish to grow their business, as well as those considering starting a new business. The SCORE counselors will address preparations for a professional business plan and options for obtaining the necessary financing.

The workshop will be in four parts: business concepts and data collection, marketing strategies, financial forecasting and completing the business plan. It is designed to help clients make a "go" or "no-go" decision for their business idea. Both homework and counseling are a part of the workshop process.

"Small businesses are the backbone of our economic community, and our goal is to both help new entrepreneurs get started, as well as to help existing businesses grow," said Marty Cohen, a SCORE counselor.

To make reservations, please call (904) 460-1251, (904) 471-8891, or email shelmar826@bellsouth.net.

The four sessions that will be presented are:

Business Concepts and Data Collection - This session reviews the process of putting together a Feasibility Plan to determine if a business idea makes sense. This session covers the business idea or concept, the need met by the product or service, industry profile, competition, and target markets. The session also reviews the process of selecting a name, business structure, hiring/managing employees, and determining how and where your business will operate.

Marketing Strategies - This marketing segment reviews the proper positioning of a product or service to maximize its appeal in the marketplace. The session also identifies the features and benefits of a product or service; adapting them to their most appropriate markets using the "4 P's of marketing" to maximize the business opportunity.

Financial Forecasting - This session reviews building a financial model for a business including estimating start-up costs, forecasting sales units and prices, and estimating fixed and variable operating costs to allow the development of a cash flow and income projection, determine breakeven points, and investigate the impact of pricing decisions on a venture's profitability. The session also focuses on understanding accounting principles, general business records, taxes and management accounting.

Completing the Business Plan - This session covers financial statement analysis, accounting and bookkeeping systems, the "six C's of credit," banking relations, and sources of capital both traditional and non-traditional. The session also discusses how to use a business plan, either to secure financing, or as a guide to help one make decisions as one grows their business. The session concludes with a question and answer session with SCORE experts to address any remaining questions.

Evangel Business Department scholarship fund grows through significant alumni contributions

Home  >  Featured News  >  Article: Evangel Business Department scholarship fund grows through significant alumni contributions

Daniel Coryell and Bernie DanaDaniel Coryell (left), of TLC Properties in Springfield, was one of the first to step up with a check in support of the Evangel University Business Department’s new endowed scholarship fund. Dan is a 2003 EU graduate. Receiving the check is Bernie Dana, chairman of Evangel’s Department of Business.

The Evangel University Department of Business has launched a campaign to build its endowment for scholarships, and response has been exceptional, according to Bernie Dana, chair of the department.

In August, Evangel’s Department of Business established a goal to raise $700,000 in pledges for endowed business scholarships, to be fully funded within five years.

“We have nearly reached that goal in the first few months,” says Dana. “We are thrilled with the response from the alumni and friends contacted so far.”

Named the “Legacy Fund,” the first phase of the campaign was to obtain commitments for 14 Legacy Partnership shares of $25,000 each. The $350,000 committed at this stage was to be leveraged as matching funds in a general campaign to obtain the rest of the goal throughout the next year.

Instead of 14 shares, however, Dana received commitments for 25 Legacy Partnership shares, totaling $625,000 from 17 individuals and one corporation. The corporation also pledged to cover up to $10,000 in general campaign cost.

“As a result of our success in the first phase, we have expanded the campaign goal to $1 million,” says Dana.

The second phase (general campaign) was launched in mid-December with a mailing to alumni and friends of Evangel’s Department of Business.

“We are deeply grateful for the outstanding leadership that we have in all of our academic departments,” says Evangel’s President Robert H. Spence. “Bernie Dana is exemplifying the importance of fund raising being a campus-wide effort.

“The success of this effort can be attributed to the very positive relationship that his department enjoys with its alumni,” Spence added. “We believe that our other academic departments will be inspired by these results.”

Daniel Coryell, a 2003 Evangel graduate, was one of the first business alumni contacted.

“My faith-based business education at Evangel was excellent, and I’m excited about the new programs and direction of the department,” says Coryell.

Coryell Family Daniel Coryell, of TLC Properties in Springfield (seated left), was one of the first to step up in support of the Evangel University Business Department’s new endowed scholarship fund, and he brought the family business with him. Dan is a 2003 EU graduate, as is his twin brother David, standing behind him. Also shown are parents Carol and Sam Coryell (standing), President Robert H. Spence (seated center) and Bernie Dana, chair of Evangel’s Department of Business.

“I asked my family to join me in being Legacy Partners in this campaign to express our confidence in the future of Evangel’s business program,” he continued.

The Coryell’s are the owners and developers of TLC Properties in Springfield.

Started in 1988 by Sam and Carol Coryell, TLC Properties remains a family-owned and operated business, with 14 apartment communities and approximately 3,000 apartments.

Their sons, Sam M., Daniel and David have played vital roles in the development of the company. Daniel and David are both Evangel graduates.

TLC earned the Springfield Chamber of Commerce “Strube Small Business of the Year Award” in 2009. In addition, they were awarded the Springfield News-Leader “Best Property Management Company Award” in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Evangel’s Department of Business has comprehensive majors in Accounting, Business Education, Finance, Management and Marketing. The department added a Nonprofit Business & Social Enterprise major last fall.

“We also have seated and online degree-completion programs for working-adult students seeking to earn a Bachelor of Science in Management,” says Dana. “This degree can be completed while maintaining full-time employment.”

Evangel also offers a Master of Organizational Leadership program, which is an alternative MBA program with a focus on performance excellence. The MOL is offered in both a seated and a hybrid format.

For additional information, contact Bernie Dana at (417) 865-2815, ext. 8116.

Apple TV with iPad - for Business

I am trying to replace as much of my Win7 laptop as possible with my new iPad. My only struggle so far is with presentations. I have my projector (with an HDMI port) that I am thinking I could connect to an Apple TV; however, I am frequently presenting in locations that have either no Wi-Fi or a secured connection that I would not be allowed to access. Do I have to have a Wi-Fi connection in order to connect my iPad to Apple TV? If so, would I be able to use the "Personal Hotspot" from the iPad?

Noel Allen '69 named a "legal elite" by Business NC

Elon trustee wins top honors in a legal survey by the state's leading business magazine. Ten others affiliated with Elon Law also make the list.

Business North Carolina conducted a vote in 2012 of the 20,000 active members of the State Bar, asking for their picks for the best lawyers in 14 business-related specialties. Noel Allen '69, a partner in the Raleigh, N.C., law firm, Allen, Pinnix and Nichols PA, received the most votes in the antitrust category, earning a spot in the magazine's 12th class of "Legal Elites."

In this year's feature, Business North Carolina asked the winners how their college years helped them prepare for law school and their careers. Allen, who has served as an Elon trustee since 1985 and chaired the planning committees for three of the university's strategic plans, wrote the following:

"While attending Elon University, I served as president of its Student Government Association. That experience taught me a lot about public service, leadership, prioritization, achieving goals and the value of appreciating both sides of a dispute."

Allen cited Elon University as one of his life's passions. He chaired the search committee that chose President Leo M. Lambert in 1998 and he was instrumental in the creation of Elon University School of Law. He remains a member of the law school's advisory board.

The "Legal Elite" feature is in the January 2013 edition of the magazine. See the profile of Allen online at: http://www.businessnc.com/articles/2013-01/legal-elite-antitrust-2013-category/

Less than 3.5% of North Carolina’s lawyers were selected by their peers as the “2013 Legal Elite.” In addition to Allen, lawyers affiliated with Elon University and/or Elon University School of Law who were selected among the "2013 Legal Elite" include:

Business Law - W. Randy Eaddy, a member of Elon’s law school advisory board and a partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP, Winston-Salem;

Environmental Law - John M. Flynn, distinguished practioner-in-residence at Elon Law and a director at Carruthers & Roth PA, Greensboro;

Bankruptcy Law - Damon Duncan, a 2006 graduate of Elon University, a 2009 graduate of Elon University School of Law and an attorney with Duncan Law PLLC, Greensboro;

Employment Law - J. Heydt Philbeck, Elon Class of 1989, Bailey & Dixon LLP, Raleigh;

The following members of the extended faculty of Elon Law were selected as “2013 Legal Elite”:

Bankruptcy Law - Rayford K. “Trip” Adams III, Spilman Thomas & Battle, Winston-Salem;

Construction Law - Harper Heckman, Nexsen Pruet LLC, Greensboro and Neale T. Johnson, Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP, Greensboro;

Family Law - Afi Johnson-Parris, The Law Office of Afi Johnson-Parris PLLC, Greensboro and Barbara R. Morgenstern, Barbara R. Morgenstern PLLC, Greensboro;

Intellectual Property - Jack B. Hicks, Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice PLLC, Greensboro;
