Albany, New York (March 5, 2013) – Excelsior College today announced a new scholarship program for Phi Theta Kappa members transferring from a college academic partner.

Two scholarships will be awarded annually under the new program. A regional scholarship will be awarded to an enrolling student residing within New York State, and a second to a national recipient residing outside state boundaries.

Each recipient will be awarded $1,000, which may be applied to Excelsior College tuition and fees only. This scholarship is in addition to our preferential partnership pricing.

“This scholarship provides another unique opportunity to our community college transfer students,” said Lisa LaVigna, executive director for Outreach and Access at Excelsior College. “We recognize the outstanding academic achievement of Phi Theta Kappa students, and we want to acknowledge and reward them for their commitment to their education. Phi Theta Kappa is widely known and respected. By partnering with them, we are able to increase educational opportunities for students transferring from our community college partner institutions.”

Established in 1918, the mission of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students.

Excelsior Announces “We’ve Got Your Back Scholarship” and Additional Steps to Reduce Impact of Military Tuition Assistance (TA) Suspension

Albany, New York (March 19, 2013) – In response to the suspension of Military Tuition Assistance (TA) due to the Federal Sequester, Excelsior College today announced a range of steps it has taken to support current and future active duty students, including a “We’ve Got Your Back Scholarship.”

Excelsior will award a “We’ve Got Your Back Scholarship” of $75 per credit to enrolled military students to reduce out-of-pocket costs they will face under suspension of TA. The College, which counts more than 10,000 active duty military among its more than 36,000 students, will also waive the enrollment fee for active duty military now through June 30, 2013 or until TA is restored.

Excelsior is also recommending that current and future students apply for Federal Student Aid by filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and to speak with one of its military advisors to explore the VA Benefits to which a servicemember may be entitled. Excelsior is also streamlining the process by allowing military personnel to register for courses while they apply to the VA for a Certificate of Eligibility.

“We know time and out-of-pocket expenses are a huge concern to our military students,” said Susan Dewan, executive director of the Center for Military Education at Excelsior College. “Excelsior has a proud tradition of serving the military and we are committed to helping lessen the financial impact the cuts in TA will have on servicemembers. Through the waiver, scholarship and additional financial aid options we are making it possible for our military students to continue to pursue their degree.”

For more than forty years, Excelsior’s credit transfer acceptance policy, including credit by examination, and recognized military training, has accelerated the degree pathway for more than 40,000 active duty and veteran personnel who have earned a degree from Excelsior. This and the personal service it provides to military students are two of the many reasons Excelsior has consistently been ranked among the top military-friendly schools in the country by Military Advanced Education, G.I. Jobs, and Military Times.

'Night of the Phoenix' raises scholarship funds

More than $155,000 was collected for student-athlete scholarships in February at the sixth annual event.

Elon University’s "Night of the Phoenix" fundraising event in February raised more than $155,000 for student-athlete scholarships.

The annual event, now in its sixth year, continues to exceed the previous year’s event record. The Night of the Phoenix has now raised almost $600,000 in annual scholarship support for the Phoenix Club. The Phoenix Club Advisory Board and Elon’s Department of Athletics coordinates the event.

“I’m excited about the success of this year’s event,” said Mike Cross, Phoenix Club Advisory Board Chair. “This is always a night people look forward to and the support from alumni, parents and the rest of the Elon community is tremendous. I look forward to continuing this annual tradition for many years to come.”

The Feb. 22 program began with a cocktail hour and silent auction that featured nearly 200 items. Some of the auction items included sports memorabilia, numerous Elon items, a weeklong vacation with airfare to Hawaii, numerous mountain and beach home trips and Miami Heat playoff tickets.

After dinner, trustee Zac Walker III '60 and his wife, Dot, were presented with Elon Medallions from university President Leo M. Lambert in appreciation for their devotion and generous support to Phoenix athletics, scholarships and campus facilities. Elon medallions are awarded every year in recognition of individuals who have contributed outstanding service to Elon over the course of many years.

Elon Director of Athletics Dave Blank then offered his opening remarks and introduced senior football player Blake Thompson, who shared his thoughts and experiences on being an Elon student-athlete.

Following Thompson’s comments and a video featuring women’s basketball’s Kelsey Evans and Ali Ford and football’s Olufemi Lamikanra, auctioneer Matt Holiday encouraged attendees to "Stand Up for the Phoenix."

“What a fantastic night for Elon University Athletics,” Blank said. “It was great to see so many community members come together to support the education and experiences of our student-athletes. Witnessing this community’s generosity is always incredible. We are so grateful for all of their support and involvement. We also appreciate the hard work and effort from the Phoenix Club Advisory Board that helps make this event a success.”

The evening’s entertainment was provided by comedian Tom Cotter, who recently became the first comedian to ever reach the finals of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent." Cotter has also become a familiar face on television shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Last Comic Standing, The Today Show and his own series TWO-FUNNY.

Cross ended the evening by sharing the final number raised with the event’s attendees, which was received with a huge round of applause from everyone in Alumni Gym.

Elon junior a finalist for Truman Scholarship

An Elon University student has been named a finalist for a 2013 Truman Scholarship, a prestigious national fellowship awarded each year to college juniors with goals of working in education, government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, or elsewhere in public service.

Mat Goldberg, a psychology major with minors in leadership studies and business administration, is a finalist for an award that funds up to $30,000 for graduate study. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation received 629 applications this year from 293 colleges and universities.

Winners will be announced April 11, 2013.

In addition to the monetary award, Truman Scholars receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within the federal government.

The Foundation, established by Congress in 1975 as a memorial to the 33rd president, awards scholarships for college students to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service. The foundation has named 2,844 Truman Scholars since the first awards were made in 1977.

Goldberg said he plans to attend graduate school to study the intersection of psychology, education and leadership. He hopes to open a nonprofit working with underprivileged students to teach leadership education and build confidence in effort to improved their self-esteem and improve school performance.

The Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellow and Periclean Scholar is the co-founder and president of the Handmade Co-Op, and he has held student leadership roles in the Center for Leadership. The member of the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society has served as a Hillel Engagement Intern and its Social Justice Chair, and he has interned at the Interactive Resource Center in Greensboro, N.C.

“This scholarship (application) has offered me the chance to reflect on my experiences and character, challenging me to think critically and ask tough questions that will help guide my future direction,” Goldberg said. “The Truman Fellowship can help advance my future career by connecting me with a community of civic leaders, provide me financial support for gradual school and offer me resources that further my leadership education and challenge me to continuously strive for creating social change.”

Goldberg is the son of Marc and Harlene Goldberg, Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Breanna Detwiler ‘09 was the first Elon University student to win a Truman Scholarship. She received the honor in 2008.

The Evangel University Department of Business has launched a campaign to build its endowment for scholarships, and response has been exceptional, according to Bernie Dana, chair of the department.

In August, Evangel’s Department of Business established a goal to raise $700,000 in pledges for endowed business scholarships, to be fully funded within five years.

“We have nearly reached that goal in the first few months,” says Dana. “We are thrilled with the response from the alumni and friends contacted so far.”

Named the “Legacy Fund,” the first phase of the campaign was to obtain commitments for 14 Legacy Partnership shares of $25,000 each. The $350,000 committed at this stage was to be leveraged as matching funds in a general campaign to obtain the rest of the goal throughout the next year.

Instead of 14 shares, however, Dana received commitments for 25 Legacy Partnership shares, totaling $625,000 from 17 individuals and one corporation. The corporation also pledged to cover up to $10,000 in general campaign cost. 

“As a result of our success in the first phase, we have expanded the campaign goal to $1 million,” says Dana.

The second phase (general campaign) was launched in mid-December with a mailing to alumni and friends of Evangel’s Department of Business.

“We are deeply grateful for the outstanding leadership that we have in all of our academic departments,” says Evangel’s President Robert H. Spence. “Bernie Dana is exemplifying the importance of fund raising being a campus-wide effort.

“The success of this effort can be attributed to the very positive relationship that his department enjoys with its alumni,” Spence added. “We believe that our other academic departments will be inspired by these results.”

Daniel Coryell, a 2003 Evangel graduate, was one of the first business alumni contacted.

“My faith-based business education at Evangel was excellent, and I’m excited about the new programs and direction of the department,” says Coryell.

“I asked my family to join me in being Legacy Partners in this campaign to express our confidence in the future of Evangel’s business program,” he continued.

The Coryell’s are the owners and developers of TLC Properties in Springfield.

Started in 1988 by Sam and Carol Coryell, TLC Properties remains a family-owned and operated business, with 14 apartment communities and approximately 3,000 apartments.

Their sons, Sam M., Daniel and David have played vital roles in the development of the company. Daniel and David are both Evangel graduates.

TLC earned the Springfield Chamber of Commerce “Strube Small Business of the Year Award” in 2009. In addition, they were awarded the Springfield News-Leader “Best Property Management Company Award” in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Evangel’s Department of Business has comprehensive majors in Accounting, Business Education, Finance, Management and Marketing. The department added a Nonprofit Business & Social Enterprise major last fall.

“We also have seated and online degree-completion programs for working-adult students seeking to earn a Bachelor of Science in Management,” says Dana. “This degree can be completed while maintaining full-time employment.”

Evangel also offers a Master of Organizational Leadership program, which is an alternative MBA program with a focus on performance excellence. The MOL is offered in both a seated and a hybrid format.
