Evangel University to present spring drama production: “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”

Charlie Brown Spring Production 2013 200dpi

Evangel University students will present the Broadway musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown this month in the Barnett Fine Arts Theatre.

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. April 4-6 and April 11-13. There will also be matinee performances at 2 p.m. on April 6 and April 13.

“EU Night” is scheduled for opening night, April 4. Tickets are $5 for everyone with an Evangel ID in attendance that evening.

For all other shows, tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for group tickets (10 people or more), and $6 for students.

The production will be directed by David Smith, director of Evangel’s theatre program, and Lori Lawley, 1985 Evangel graduate.

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is adapted from the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schultz, with book, music and lyrics by Clark Gesner.

In this musical Charlie Brown, as portrayed by Evangel senior Jordan Walker, searches for approval from friends Lucy, Patti, Schroeder, Linus and Snoopy.

“It excites me to have the opportunity to portray an American icon. The musical is full of humor, upset and trivial things, but in the end, it’s about finding out who you are,” says Walker. “This is what I like most about the musical — its relevancy to life today. It’s a look into how we grow through our triumphs and disappointments.”

Walker is playing the lead role after completing his senior voice recital earlier this spring as part of the certification requirements for performance majors. He plans to pursue a master’s degree in music education at Evangel after graduation.

“This is a show for the entire family. You won’t want to miss this delightful spin on the famous Peanuts comic strip,” Smith says. “Expect a lively play with wonderful music and staging.”

Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling Lisa Kraus at (417) 865-2815, ext. 8640.

Theater production “(Sacco-Vanzetti) Vince, Al & Teddy” April 2-7

A new play that examines “otherness” in America through the immigrant experience – and framed against the backdrop of the polarizing Sacco-Vanzetti trial of the 1920s – will have its world premiere as Fitchburg State University’s spring theater production.

"(Sacco-Vanzetti) Vince, Al & Teddy," written by Bruce Robinson, will be performed at the Wallace Theater for the Performing Arts at the McKay Complex, 67 Rindge Road. Performances will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 and Wednesday, April 3; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4 through Saturday, April 6; and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7. Admission is free.

The play, presented by the university’s Communications Media and Industrial Technology departments, is directed by faculty member Kelly Morgan.

Set in 1925, “(Sacco-Vanzetti) Vince, Al & Teddy” explores painfully relevant themes. As it does on our time, the shadow of war and political disquiet made fear the atmosphere and personal liberty a luxury. As in our time, anyone too different or foreign caused apprehension.

This two-act play uses the trial of Sacco-Vanzetti as a touchstone and an emblem.  It testifies to a time not so long ago when Italians were marginalized – and were deported or executed because of their beliefs.  It witnesses a complex family and a young man changing against a dynamic background – of course, all executed in a highly theatrical way.

A talk with scholar Michael Topp will precede the performance at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 3. Topp will discuss the reverberations from world-wide protests and cultural upheaval surrounding the 1927 execution of the two laborers, provoking anti-Italian, anti-immigrant and anti-anarchist sentiments that still resonate.

A conversation will also follow the final performance on Sunday, April 7, where playwright Bruce Robinson, director Kelly Morgan and regional scholars will reflect on the play’s premiere, Robinson’s three-week residency and the relevance of the play’s issues.

"(Sacco-Vanzetti) Vince, Al & Teddy" is funded in part by the Center for Italian Culture and the Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Endowment at Fitchburg State University.

Upcoming Theatre Production: As It Is In Heaven

April 3, 2009–The Belhaven College Theatre Department announces its production of As It Is In Heaven, a play by Arlene Hutton. The show will run on April 16-18 and 22-25, 2009. Directed by Sarah Coury, this production is set in the early 1800s in a Shaker-ville in Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. The play takes place during a period in time known as “Mother Ann’s Work,” when traditional Shaker worship practices were challenged by new revelations led by a younger and newer Shaker generation. Central to the play are themes of relationship to both God and man, and the personal faith and peace required at times to reconcile the two to each other. General Admission $10, Students/Seniors $5. 7:30 pm, Belhaven College Center for the Arts, Flexible Theatre. To purchase tickets, contact the Belhaven box office (601-965-7026 or boxoffice@belhaven.edu.
