Kinesiology Department launches new Recreation and Sport Management major

Recreation & Sport Management

Are you interested in a career managing the business side of collegiate or professional athletic programs, or the recreational sport industry? Evangel University has launched a major in Recreation and Sport Management for students interested in this growing field.

The new program, which will start in the fall of 2013, will be offered through the Kinesiology Department.

Donovan Nelson Donovan Nelson

“We have created a degree that will prepare our graduates for jobs in the recreation and sport industry,” says Donovan Nelson, assistant professor of kinesiology and coordinator for the new program. “We anticipate continued growth in our department because of the new major.”

The degree program will prepare students to work in the sport industry in areas such as marketing, sales, facility operations, travel/tourism, public relations, administration, campus recreation and adult/child recreation programs.

“We have an extensive network for placement in sport fields, including minor league baseball, DI athletic programs, parks and recreation departments, nonprofit recreation organizations and campus recreation agencies,” says Dr. Keith Hardy, kinesiology department chair.

“We created a sport management minor about five years ago,” Nelson says. “Rewriting our recreation major allowed us to expand the degree program to meet student demand.”

Courses include sport marketing, facility management, recreation & sport leadership, and organization & administration, among others. Two communication courses will include desktop publishing and a special topic sport communication class taught by Ed Beach, assistant athletic director.

Evangel Business Department scholarship fund grows through significant alumni contributions

Home  >  Featured News  >  Article: Evangel Business Department scholarship fund grows through significant alumni contributions

Daniel Coryell and Bernie DanaDaniel Coryell (left), of TLC Properties in Springfield, was one of the first to step up with a check in support of the Evangel University Business Department’s new endowed scholarship fund. Dan is a 2003 EU graduate. Receiving the check is Bernie Dana, chairman of Evangel’s Department of Business.

The Evangel University Department of Business has launched a campaign to build its endowment for scholarships, and response has been exceptional, according to Bernie Dana, chair of the department.

In August, Evangel’s Department of Business established a goal to raise $700,000 in pledges for endowed business scholarships, to be fully funded within five years.

“We have nearly reached that goal in the first few months,” says Dana. “We are thrilled with the response from the alumni and friends contacted so far.”

Named the “Legacy Fund,” the first phase of the campaign was to obtain commitments for 14 Legacy Partnership shares of $25,000 each. The $350,000 committed at this stage was to be leveraged as matching funds in a general campaign to obtain the rest of the goal throughout the next year.

Instead of 14 shares, however, Dana received commitments for 25 Legacy Partnership shares, totaling $625,000 from 17 individuals and one corporation. The corporation also pledged to cover up to $10,000 in general campaign cost.

“As a result of our success in the first phase, we have expanded the campaign goal to $1 million,” says Dana.

The second phase (general campaign) was launched in mid-December with a mailing to alumni and friends of Evangel’s Department of Business.

“We are deeply grateful for the outstanding leadership that we have in all of our academic departments,” says Evangel’s President Robert H. Spence. “Bernie Dana is exemplifying the importance of fund raising being a campus-wide effort.

“The success of this effort can be attributed to the very positive relationship that his department enjoys with its alumni,” Spence added. “We believe that our other academic departments will be inspired by these results.”

Daniel Coryell, a 2003 Evangel graduate, was one of the first business alumni contacted.

“My faith-based business education at Evangel was excellent, and I’m excited about the new programs and direction of the department,” says Coryell.

Coryell Family Daniel Coryell, of TLC Properties in Springfield (seated left), was one of the first to step up in support of the Evangel University Business Department’s new endowed scholarship fund, and he brought the family business with him. Dan is a 2003 EU graduate, as is his twin brother David, standing behind him. Also shown are parents Carol and Sam Coryell (standing), President Robert H. Spence (seated center) and Bernie Dana, chair of Evangel’s Department of Business.

“I asked my family to join me in being Legacy Partners in this campaign to express our confidence in the future of Evangel’s business program,” he continued.

The Coryell’s are the owners and developers of TLC Properties in Springfield.

Started in 1988 by Sam and Carol Coryell, TLC Properties remains a family-owned and operated business, with 14 apartment communities and approximately 3,000 apartments.

Their sons, Sam M., Daniel and David have played vital roles in the development of the company. Daniel and David are both Evangel graduates.

TLC earned the Springfield Chamber of Commerce “Strube Small Business of the Year Award” in 2009. In addition, they were awarded the Springfield News-Leader “Best Property Management Company Award” in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Evangel’s Department of Business has comprehensive majors in Accounting, Business Education, Finance, Management and Marketing. The department added a Nonprofit Business & Social Enterprise major last fall.

“We also have seated and online degree-completion programs for working-adult students seeking to earn a Bachelor of Science in Management,” says Dana. “This degree can be completed while maintaining full-time employment.”

Evangel also offers a Master of Organizational Leadership program, which is an alternative MBA program with a focus on performance excellence. The MOL is offered in both a seated and a hybrid format.

Department of Arizona, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Partners with Excelsior College to Provide Pathway to College Degree

Albany, New York (January 14, 2013) – The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Arizona has signed an education agreement with Excelsior College that will allow VFW members and their spouses/domestic partners to pursue undergraduate or graduate degrees for reduced tuition and fees.

The new statewide partnership builds toward a national VFW objective aimed at drawing younger veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan seeking educational opportunity.

“The state of Arizona VFW is very proud to have entered into this partnership with Excelsior College,” said State Commander Michael Ferguson, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Arizona. “This is another example on how the VFW is looking to reach out to all veterans, especially our younger vets just getting out of the military. We’re hoping they will take advantage of this opportunity to earn a degree and advance their skills. We believe our veterans and their spouses have earned it for their sacrifice.”

“Since our founding more than four decades ago, Excelsior has strived to serve the military and veterans communities both at home and abroad,” said Excelsior College President John F. Ebersole. “Arizona is home to more than a half-million veterans, with more coming home soon enough, as drawdowns continue and more of our brave servicemembers return from battle. This partnership will help to provide a pathway for these returning men and women to seek out a higher education.”

Arizona is home to approximately 557,000 veterans with the number expected to grow as servicemembers return to Arizona from overseas missions over the coming years. The Department of Arizona VFW currently counts 25,560 members among its 77 posts.

Excelsior, a regionally accredited nonprofit distance learning college based in Albany, New York, has a long and successful history serving the veteran community that began with its founding in 1971. In addition to broad online programming, Excelsior is also home to Excelsior College® Examinations, an extensive credit-by-examination program that provides an additional pathway to affordable degree completion.

Among the more than 37,000 currently enrolled students, over 14,000 count themselves as active-duty or of veteran status. And of the more than 5,200 Excelsior graduates in the 2011-2012 academic year, 34 percent were members of the U.S. military.

The College offers an extensive range of academic support programs and services tailored to veterans, including career counseling, financial counseling on veteran benefits, and an online veteran center with vet to vet mentorship. Many financial aid and academic advisors are veterans themselves.

In addition, Excelsior accepts prior military training in the form of academic transfer credit based on recommendations from the American Council on Education's Military Evaluations Program. Each year, Excelsior accepts approximately 50,000 military training program credits toward completion of undergraduate degree programs.

Under the agreement, veterans may enroll in degree programs from any of Excelsior’s schools: Business and Technology, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Nursing.

Excelsior College's other education credentials include:

• G.I. Jobs has named Excelsior a top military-friendly school the past four years and Military Advanced Education has recognized Excelsior College the past five years. For the third year in a row Excelsior College has been named a “Best for Vets” college by Military Times Edge magazine.
• Excelsior's course, "Success Strategies for Military and Veterans" earned the 2010-2011 Innovation Award from the Center for Transforming Student Services (CENTSS). The course provides college and career orientation to veterans and military members and teaches transition strategies for those entering the civilian workforce after a military career.
• Excelsior is a recipient of the Council of College and Military Educators' (CCME) Institutional Award.
• Excelsior's military academic advising team includes veterans who are uniquely attuned to the unique needs of military students, veterans and their spouses.
• Center for Military Education (CME) Executive Director Susan Dewan is the recipient of the 2011 William E. Kennedy Award from the Council of College and Military Educators (CCME), which recognizes leadership in providing higher education programs to personnel at U.S. military installations.
• Excelsior President Ebersole is a U.S. Coast Guard veteran who served in Vietnam and received the Secretary of the Army Public Service Award in 2010 for his leadership in contributing to the Army's educational mission.
