Residential campus plan featured in Chronicle of Higher Ed

Elon's transformation of the residential campus is part of a national trend for enhanced student housing.

Elon's Global Neighborhood is under construction next to Lake Mary Nell.

The Chronicle of Higher Education, a major news source covering higher education, included Elon in a story on colleges that are investing in residential projects to foster an intellectual atmosphere and increase student involvement on campus.

As part of the Elon Commitment strategic plan, Elon is adding housing for 1,600 students on campus, creating seven distinct neighborhoods designed to meet the needs of students at various stages of their college careers. The goal of the nearly $100 million initiative is to create a campus with seamless connections among the academic, co-curricular and residential experiences.

Elon opened the Colonnades residential neighborhood in two phases, with completion in 2011. The Station at Mill Point, a townhouse village for juniors and seniors, opened in fall 2012. Currently under construction is the six-building Global Neighborhood, providing housing for 600 students and a 30,000-square-foot commons building housing the Isabella Cannon International Centre, classrooms, faculty offices and ample study rooms and large gathering spaces.

The Chronicle of Higher Education noted that 58 percent of Elon students currently live on campus. Smith Jackson, vice president of student life and dean of students, told The Chronicle that Elon's goal is to increase residency to 67 percent by 2014.

Other universities featured by The Chronicle with residential projects under way include Michigan State, Southern Methodist University, Franklin & Marshall and the University of Puget Sound.

Reminder about campus weather notifications

There are many ways to find out about weather delays and closings at Elon. Read this note for details, including how to get text messages.

Currently the university sends an email and posts notices on E-net, and the 278-SNOW (278-7669) telephone line, by 6 am on days the university is to open on a delayed schedule, or closed due to extreme weather conditions. The university will now also send a text message via the E-alert program. Please note that E-net continues to be the primary and most up-to-date source for this information.

With the forecast of possible snow and sleet tomorrow afternoon and night, today is a good time to sign-up for E-alert, or to verify your registration is current, so you will receive text alerts to your cell phone for weather related notifications and emergency situations. Instructions are given below.

Administrators will be monitoring the weather tonight and if there is a change in the normal class and operating schedule of the university for tomorrow, the campus will be notified. Otherwise, the university will operate on its regular schedule on Jan. 25.

Instructions for signing up for or verifying your E-alert registration

Elon’s alert system delivers timely notifications through multiple ways, which direct you to E-Net for more information. E-net is the best source for information during emergencies and weather warnings and is updated regularly. Always check the website at http://www.elon.edu/e-net/for announcements and information.

Please sign-up for E-alert at www.elon.edu/e-alert to enable the university to send urgent text messages to your cell phone. Everyone who signs up is automatically enrolled in Emergency Notification group. There are also two weather categories, one for main campus and one for the Law School. Make sure you add the weather category for your campus.

If you are not a first-time user of E-alert, please note that you must re-enroll with E-alert every two years. It is important to verify that your registration is current, up-to-date and active. You can verify your information by logging into your account at www.elon.edu/e-alert.

Learn more about Elon’s comprehensive emergency response system at http://emergency.elon.edu/. You can also find this information on the “Tools” tab located in the upper right-hand corner of all Elon website locations.
