Fairfield University panel discussion on contemporary Cuba planned

Image: Cuban carsFive Fairfield University professors who visited Havana in January will give their multidisciplinary impressions of contemporary Cuba in "Havana Today: Between Continuity and Change" on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 6 p.m. The discussion, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the University's DiMenna-Nyselius Library multimedia room.

Faculty participating in the talk will be: Joy Gordon, Ph.D., professor of politics; Gisela Gil-Egui, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication; Olivia Harriott, Ph.D., associate professor of biology; Ania Aksan, Ph.D., assistant professor of economics; and Giovanni Ruffini, Ph.D., associate professor of history.

Light refreshments will be provided.

The event is part of the University's two-year focus on Cities. It is sponsored by the Humanities Institute of the College of Arts & Sciences; the Latin American & Caribbean Studies Program; the Public Lectures & Events Committee; the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program; and the departments of Philosophy, Communication, Biology, Economics, and History.

Flagler College to Host Florida Humanities Council Documentary and Discussion on the Future of Florida

Flagler College will host a free screening of the documentary "Florida: Choosing the Future" on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Flagler College Auditorium. The half-hour film, sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council and Flagler, challenges viewers to grapple with tough decisions that will affect our state's future in government policy, business development, education and citizen involvement.

Following the film there will be a panel discussion by Florida leaders including two-term Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, Jacksonville civic activist Philip Mobley, and former Department of Community Affairs Secretary Steve Seibert.

Iorio, who left office with an 87 percent approval rating, is now the Leader-in-Residence at the John H. Sykes College of Business at the University of Tampa. Mobley is chair of OneJax, an organization dedicated to promoting understanding and respect among people of different races. He also is on the of Hope Haven Children's Clinic and Family Center. Seibert, a Florida Humanities council board member, has a statewide reputation for helping resolve contentious environmental issues. He also is on the boards of the Fortune 500 crop nutrition company Mosaic, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes and the Friends of Florida State Parks.

The Flagler College Auditorium is located at 14 Granada St. in St. Augustine.

Image: W GordonFairfield University's School of Engineering and the Inventors Association of Connecticut (IACT) kick off the new year with an event featuring angel investors and entrepreneurs entitled, "Prospecting for Funding in 2013," on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 7 p.m. Free and open to the public, it will take place in the Dolan School of Business, on the Fairfield campus.

"For those seeking funding or who have plans to seek future funding, this panel discussion will offer invaluable insights to the process as well as potential sources," said Douglas Lyon, Ph.D., chair of the department of computer engineering and IACT president.

Mike Roer, founder and president of the Entrepreneurship Foundation and former executive director of the Connecticut Venture Group, will moderate the discussion. The panelists include:

Tim Coates, managing director of the new Innovation Eco-System at Connecticut Technology Council. Locations in Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, and Storrs are serving as ecosystem hubs, which will provide entrepreneurs with financial, technical, professional, and mentoring resources, as well as collaborative workspaces.William E. Gordon III, angel investor and advisor to tech start-ups, received a Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley, where he worked with Nobel Laureate James Watson. He founded and later sold an interest in a broadband business in Europe. He also ran a biotech company where he won a Gates Grand Challenge Exploration Grant for creating a malaria vaccine.John Seiffer, president of Angel Investor Forum, and business advisor at CEO Boot Camp. He helps business owners become better leaders, and is a founder of the International Coach Federation. He's also been an entrepreneur for almost 30 years and is an angel investor in start-ups.
